One of the lovely things about having a large garden surrounded by trees is the number and variety of birds we get visiting. Here are the 5 of the top birds you will find:

Goldfinch

5 of the top birds you will find - Goldfinch

Before we moved o Dunvegan seeing Goldfinches was a rarity. I used to see them at the school I worked at, pecking at the mortar in the bricks next to the rock salt store. But here they are in abundance and are feisty little birds. Fighting their corner and protecting their spot on the feeder.

Siskin

5 of the top birds you will find ////siskin

I will readily admit, I mistook Siskins for young greenfinch at first. Until I realised they are a much different colour, a vibrant yellow/green and they frequent the garden in large numbers. Especially when there are seeds on the bird table, it looks like a bird creche.

Blue Tit

5 of the top birds you will find blue tit

Blue tits are less in number than the other varieties. But it is lovely to see that flash of blue flying through the trees and undergrowth. This young one appeared to have fallen asleep holding onto the inner nut cage before we checked up on it.

Great Tit

5 of the top birds you will find great tit

Great Tits are regular visitors to the garden and we have been lucky to see a few young families this year. They look after their young, taking seeds and feeding them to them sat on the fence,

Redpoll

5 of the top birds you will find redpoll

This was a new one to me when we arrived. The first year we were here we only saw two but this year we have had a couple of families with their young which was lovely to see.

We have recently upgraded our feeders to ones you clean more easily. This will help stop the spread of diseases. You can find out more about them here – Finches Friends.
