Travelling with children brings its challenges but bringing them to experience the Isle of Skye is something they will remember for ever. Below are just a few child friendly activities that you might find useful.

The Fairy Pools

This is a relatively easy walk along the river Brittle with waterfalls and large pools, making it a great child friendly activity. Some visitors have been known to swim in the pools, but take care if you do. There is a pay and display, community run, car park with toilet facilities.

A view up to the Cuillin Ridge with the Fairy pools in the fore a child friendly walk

Glenbrittle Beach

If you carry on down the road from the Fairy Pools you will come to Glenbrittle Beach. There is parking just before the entrance to the campsite. Children love running along the shore, plenty of space to fly a kite or go for a paddle.

Why not walk up through the dune to the cafe on the campsite, you won’t be disappointed.

Staffin Beach

The beach is child friendly and offers a sandy area with cliffs, a rocky area with tidal pools for exploring, and dinosaur footprints. It’s a great place for children to play and on a good day go for a paddle too. Remember to check the tide times as the beach gets completley covered at high tide. You can check tide times here

After exploring why not go to get something to eat at The Hungry Gull at Staffin Hall.

A walk along the Quiraing

The walk is child friendly but it maybe for children who are good walkers. The walk is relatively level but the path can narrow in places. For those who perhaps would find it a little difficult it is still worth a visit as they will definitely enjoy the spectacular view.

A child friendly walk along to the otter hide in Kylerhea

If you visit the south of the island a drive to Kylerhea is worth the detour. The single track road has some spectacular views. The walk to the hide is well signposted and there is level car parking. The path is child friendly as it is flat and suitable for all. It is a great place to spot wildlife so remember your binoculars.

Whilst in Kylerhea why not drive to the bottom of the road and take a trip on the ferry over to Glenelg. The kids will love it. Look out for seals as you cross.

The Museum of Island Life

The Museum is in Kilmuir at the North of the island. Child friendly, it gives a glimpse of what life would have been like living in the black houses. They get to explore the past, I wonder if they would like to go back to those days?

Fancy a play in the park?

There are two good play parks. One in Edinbane with a good mix of wooden equipment and another at Sligachan which has a zip wire.
