As you would imagine being an island there are many boat trips available on Skye. Here are our Top 5 Boat Trips on Skye.

1. Bella Jane Boat Trips ~ Elgol

Really Elgol should of been included in our Top 5 Places to visit on Skye. Elgol is 14 miles down a mainly single track road from Broadford. When you arrive your breath is taken away as you suddenly drop down to the harbour and Loch Scavaig.

Why not take the early boat that goes over to Loch Coruisk. You will sail around the coastline to see the geological formations and wildlife and then go over to Loch na Cuilce. Once ashore, why not take a packed lunch and a drink, and do the circular route around Loch Coruisk with the Cuillen peaks surrounding you. The landscape is really dramatic and well worth the trip.

At the end of the walk you will get picked up by the Bella Jane and may even be given a hot drink and cake as you return to Elgol.

You can find out more about all their boat trips and book your here. You can read more about our walk and see our photos here.

2. Seaflower Skye Boat Trip

The Seaflower Skye offers exploration of the stunning coastline of the Isle of Skye, from the water on one of their luxury sea tours. Enjoy a unique view of landmarks such as The Storr and the breath taking Cuillin’s aboard the MV Seaflower. Departing daily from Portree. You can enjoy a day out to Raasay and Rona with seafood lunch or a trip to Rona with seafood lunch and the opportunity to get off and explore the island, which we highly recommend. This trip is certainly on our bucket list. Book your trip and find out more here.

3. Skye Marine Boat Trip

You will head out into Loch Greshornish then on to Loch Snizort and Loch Diubaig and, depending on the time of year, you’ll have a great chance of seeing seals, puffins, dolphins, porpoise, Minke whales, sea eagles and sometimes otters, if you have children they will love it. There are an abundance of other marine mammals and seabirds around some of the remote, uninhabited islands that they visit.

And if you’d like to catch your own supper in the breathtaking scenery of Loch Snizort then book one of their fishing trips. Trevor will use his local knowledge to get you to some of our best fishing grounds. Rod and tackle hire is also available. Ian and our son-in-law enjoyed a very successful fishing trip.

4. Go to St Kilda Boat Trip

Departing from Stein Jetty early in the morning you are taken the 85 miles across the Minch and to the Atlantic to arrive at St Kilda some four hours later.

You sail around the Stacs and can see lots of birds nesting. You cab also see the changes to the rocks caused by hot lava that had forced its’ way through, million of years ago. It was hard to imagine that for thousands of years people lived on Hirta. That they used rowing boats to get to the stacs, jumping ashore between the crashing waves. Climbing up the cliffs to collect birds eggs and seabirds to eat during the winter months. We took this trip in September 2022 and you can read more about our trip here. Find our more about the trips Go to St Kilda do here.

5. The Kylerhea to Glenelg Ferry

You might think this is an odd choice but it is a ferry ride you won’t forget, the last manually operated turntable ferry in existence. Usually running from April – October, weather permitting. From Skye the ferry leaves from Kylerhea which is reached by driving down approximatley 7 miles of single track road with some dramatic scenery.

The ferry boat, the MV Glenachulish, is the last manually operated turntable ferry in the world. She is ideally suited for this crossing. There has been a car ferry service crossing the Kylerhea straits since 1934. However, the closest point to the Isle of Skye has been a crossing point for hundreds of years.

People come from all over the world to visit the ferry. Sometimes, they even get married on it! More often, passengers spot seals and herons, perhaps even an otter or our local sea-eagle.

We hope you get to enjoy one of our Top 5 Boat Trips on Skye. Why not let us know which you have done.
